In our spiritual journey, we often wonder how we can truly embody the love of God in our daily lives. The simple yet profound truth is that God’s love is always seeking expression through us. We are divine channels, conduits of this infinite love. The more we align ourselves with this truth, the more we can allow God’s love to flow through our words, actions, and thoughts.
From a Unity perspective, love is understood as one of the fundamental divine ideas. Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, wrote, “Divine love is impersonal; it loves for the sake of loving. It is not concerned with what or who it loves, nor with a return of love. Like the sun, its joy is in the shining forth of its nature.” This impersonal love is unconditional and ever-present, and we can activate it by recognizing that it is a part of who we are in all situations.
In Unity’s teachings, love is seen not only as an emotion but also as a powerful, creative force. It is the power that harmonizes and binds the universe together. When we consciously express love, we are participating in the divine activity of creation. We are co-creating a world filled with harmony, peace, and joy. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” When we allow God’s love to express through us in these ways, we become living examples of divine love in action.
However, expressing God’s love is not always easy. We are human, and we may struggle with feelings of frustration, judgment, or impatience. But these moments provide an opportunity to remember that love is not just an emotion that comes and goes—it is a divine principle that we can choose to embody. When faced with challenges, we can pause, take a breath, and ask ourselves, “How can I express the love of God in this moment?” This question helps us shift our perspective from a limited, ego-driven response to a higher, divine expression.
Unity’s fifth principle teaches that it is not enough to know spiritual truth; we must live it through our actions. When we choose to live in alignment with God’s love, we are actively participating in the transformation of the world. Every kind word, every act of forgiveness, every moment of patience is an opportunity for the love of God to express through us. As we practice this, we not only enrich our own lives but also uplift those around us.
We are never separated from the love of God. We are always connected to this infinite source of love. The more we open our hearts to it, the more it shows up in our life and affairs.
